What Film Schools Fail to Teach
Most filmmakers spend years learning about cameras, editing, directing actors, and screenwriting.
Few filmmakers are taught how to intentionally design the visual world of their film.
Yet every decision—from the colors on a wall to the costume a character wears—communicates emotion, character, theme, and story.
In this workshop, Sarah Cogan shares the principles and creative process behind designing films that feel cohesive, immersive, and emotionally resonant.
Whether you're a director, production designer, cinematographer, writer, producer, or film student, you'll learn how to think like a visual storyteller from the very beginning of the creative process.

What People Are Saying
Great films don't happen because every department does great work…
They happen because every department is telling the same story and doing great work.
Learn how to develop a visual language, communicate your creative vision to every design department, and build a collaborative process where costume, production, hair, makeup, cinematography, and every creative choice work together to tell one unforgettable story.
Because the films people remember aren't built by one artist.
They're created by a team united behind one vision.
Join the workshop and learn how to lead that vision from development through the final frame.
I'm so glad you're here.
If you're anything like most filmmakers I've worked with, you've spent years learning how to write scripts, direct actors, operate cameras, edit films, and master the technical side of filmmaking.
But there's one part of the creative process that rarely gets taught.
Film design.
Not production design alone—but how every visual element of your film, from the costumes to the sets to the hair and makeup, integrates with cinematography to create a cohesive vision.
Throughout my career, I've watched talented filmmakers struggle to bring their vision to life—not because they lacked passion or ability, but because they didn't yet have the tools to communicate that vision across every creative department.
The strongest filmmakers know how to create a shared visual language that allows costume, production design, hair, makeup, cinematography, and every creative collaborator to tell one cohesive story.
That's what this course is about.
Film is a visual art rooted in storytelling. Every color, texture, location, costume, prop, and composition is communicating something to your audience. When those choices are intentional, your audience doesn't just watch your film...
They experience it.
My hope is that this workshop changes the way you see filmmaking. That it gives you the confidence to lead creative conversations, collaborate more effectively with your design team, and create films where every visual choice serves the story.
Because that's what great film design is.
Not decoration.
Storytelling.
I'm honored you've chosen to be here, and I can't wait to share this journey with you.
See you in the workshop.
Warmly,
SARAH COGAN
